High Wind and Fire Danger Threaten Torrance County and the Manzano Mountains

Please see the following related weather warning: Winter Storm to Impact Torrance County and Manzano Mountains with Snow and Strong Winds
Torrance County and the Manzano Mountains face a significant weather threat today as powerful winds and critical fire conditions take hold across the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued both a High Wind Warning and a Red Flag Warning, highlighting the potential for hazardous travel, power outages, and extreme fire behavior.
From 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM MST, southwest winds are expected to reach 30 to 40 mph, with gusts as high as 65 mph. These strong winds could bring down trees and power lines, leading to possible outages, while blowing dust will reduce visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects to prevent damage.
In addition to the high winds, a Red Flag Warning will be in effect from noon to 7:00 PM MST due to critically low humidity levels and unseasonably warm temperatures. With relative humidity plummeting between 10 to 19 percent, any fires that develop in the Sandia and Manzano Mountains will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. The Albuquerque office of the NWS warned that extreme fire behavior is possible, and residents should avoid outdoor burning of any kind.
The NWS advised residents to take precautions by securing outdoor items, delaying travel if possible, and staying vigilant for fire risks.
