According to a National Weather Service special weather statement, a powerful storm system is set to bring increased rain, snow, and strong winds to Torrance County and the Manzano Mountains from Friday night through Saturday. Residents should prepare for hazardous winter conditions, especially in higher elevations.

Ahead of the storm, strong to severe winds will sweep through the area on Thursday, creating difficult travel conditions. By Friday night, a strengthening low-pressure system will move into New Mexico, bringing rain and snow to much of the northern and central parts of the state, including Torrance County.

In the Manzano Mountains, snowfall accumulations are expected to range between two and six inches, with higher elevations above 9,000 feet potentially receiving six to ten inches. The storm could lead to snow-packed roads and reduced visibility, making travel hazardous, particularly along NM-55 and higher terrain near the Cibola National Forest. Areas of the Estancia Valley may see lighter snow accumulations, with a dusting of a couple of inches possible.

Motorists traveling through the region should be prepared for winter driving conditions, especially on mountain roads and passes.
