US Forest Service Contains Three Lightning-Sparked Wildfires in the Manzano Mountains
Crews knocked down three small fires within a single storm cycle
Residents of Mountainair, Manzano, and Punta de Agua who caught the smell of smoke over the past two days were not imagining it. The US Forest Service (USFS) confirmed it contained three separate wildfires in the Manzano Mountains this week, all sparked by lightning during the same storm activity and all held to a fraction of an acre.
None of the three fires threatened structures, and firefighters reported all three at 100 percent containment. The cluster of ignitions is a reminder of just how quickly a single thunderstorm can ignite ground fires across the Manzanos, and why the outdoor burning restrictions already in place across Torrance County remain in effect through the rest of the fire season.
Why it matters here
Wildfire risk poses a significant financial burden for a rural county with limited firefighting resources spread across a large geographic area. The Torrance County Commission voted July 8, 2026, to extend the county's burn ban through the rest of summer, citing continued drought conditions. This week's fires landed squarely inside that restricted window, on land managed by the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest, which has also been under Stage 1 fire restrictions since May 8, 2026.

Kayser Mill Fire

The USFS noted that residual smoke from all three fires may have been visible from Mountainair, Manzano, Punta de Agua, and the surrounding communities on the east side of the Manzano range.
Outdoor fire ban still in effect
The USFS and Torrance County are reminding residents that outdoor burning restrictions remain active. The Mountainair and Sandia Ranger Districts of the Cibola National Forest are operating under Stage 1 fire restrictions through August 31, 2026, unless lifted sooner. Under Stage 1, campfires, charcoal grills, and coal and wood stoves are permitted only in developed campsites and picnic areas with agency-built fire rings, and campfires are prohibited at all dispersed camping sites. Torrance County's own burn ban, extended by the county commission earlier this month, applies countywide.
