A new wildfire ignited by lightning is burning in the Manzano Mountain Wilderness, prompting the US Forest Service to warn residents across the Estancia Valley that smoke may be visible from Mountainair and surrounding communities.

The Whiskey Fire was reported at 1:50 PM MDT on Friday, August 21, 2026, by the Capilla Peak Lookout, according to a news release from the Cibola National Forest. Fire officials believe the blaze resulted from scattered thunderstorms that moved through the area on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The fire is burning in steep terrain north of Osha Peak, south of Capilla Peak and west of the Manzano Crest Trail, within the Mountainair Ranger District portion of the 36,875-acre Manzano Mountain Wilderness. As of the initial report, the fire had burned approximately one-half acre in mixed conifer fuels, with fire behavior described as moderate and creeping.

Two engine crews are on scene: Cibola National Forest Engine 642 and Florida Engine 15, according to the release. Forest officials said fire resources are actively working to suppress the blaze, though the Forest Service had not issued an updated acreage, containment percentage or additional details as of Saturday, August 22, 2026.

Smoke from the fire may be visible from the west side of the Manzano Mountains, including Mountainair, Manzano, Punta de Agua and Torreon, forest officials said.

No evacuations have been ordered, and the Forest Service has not issued a closure order specific to the Whiskey Fire. Forest officials urged the public to avoid the fire area and reminded residents not to fly drones near the incident, warning that unauthorized aircraft can ground firefighting air operations.

The Whiskey Fire is the latest in a string of lightning-caused fires to hit the Manzano Mountain Wilderness this summer, which has been a period of unusual aridity, starving the Rio Grande. The Sand Springs Fire, reported on Friday, July 31, 2026, grew to an estimated 30 acres before reaching roughly 80% containment by August 12, 2026, as reported by the Mountainair Dispatch. Smaller lightning starts this season have included the Gallo Fire, reported July 16, 2026 near Gallo Peak, and the Box Fire, reported August 4, 2026 near Red Canyon, both of which were held to roughly one-tenth of an acre. The biggest fire of the season thus far in the area, the Deer Canyon Fire, was also caused by lightning.

The Mountainair and Sandia ranger districts remain under Stage 1 fire restrictions, in effect since May 8, 2026 through at least August 31, 2026, which prohibit campfires outside developed sites and restrict smoking and certain equipment use.

The National Weather Service forecast for Mountainair calls for isolated showers and thunderstorms through the weekend, with a high near 91 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, August 22, 2026, and winds shifting from the northwest to southwest in the afternoon. Continued lightning activity could spark additional fire starts in the area.

The Forest Service said additional updates will be issued as new information becomes available. The Dispatch will continue to follow the Whiskey Fire and update this story as conditions warrant.
