Wind Advisory Issued for Torrance County and Estancia Valley on Tuesday

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Wind Advisory for much of central New Mexico, including Torrance County, the Estancia Valley, and the Mountainair area, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM MST Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026.

Forecasters expect west winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph. The advisory covers portions of central New Mexico, the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, and communities such as Edgewood and those throughout the Estancia Valley.

For Torrance County residents, the strongest winds are likely from late morning through the afternoon. These gusty conditions may blow around unsecured objects, break tree limbs, and create hazardous crosswinds on exposed roadways, including stretches of US-60, NM-41, and US-40.

The National Weather Service also warns that patchy blowing dust could develop due to dry conditions. In open rangeland and agricultural areas, visibility may drop below three miles in localized spots, creating sudden and potentially dangerous driving conditions.

High-profile vehicles - including tractor-trailers, RVs, and livestock trailers - may have difficulty maintaining lane control during stronger gusts. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and remain alert for sudden wind shifts, especially along east-west highways.

Residents should secure outdoor items such as trash cans, patio furniture, and lightweight equipment before winds increase on Tuesday morning.
