Strong Thunderstorm Tracking Into South Central Torrance County; Gusty Winds and Hail Expected Until 6 PM
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Special Weather Statement for a strong thunderstorm affecting south central Torrance County and eastern Socorro County, in effect until 6 p.m. MDT this evening (Saturday, July 11, 2026).
At 5:30 p.m. MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 9 miles northeast of Claunch (approximately 17 miles west of Corona), moving southwest at 20 mph. The storm is expected to impact the southern reaches of Torrance County within the next 30 minutes.
Expected Hazards:
Wind gusts up to 50 mph could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Nickel-size hail (approximately 0.88 inches in diameter) is possible, with minor damage to vehicles and outdoor objects expected.
Residents in the Claunch area and surrounding south central Torrance County should remain alert as the storm moves through.
Flash Flood Risk:
Heavy rains from strong thunderstorms can produce sudden and dangerous flows in arroyos, ditches, and over low water crossings. The mountainous terrain around Claunch and the South Central Highlands contains numerous arroyos and dry washes that can swell rapidly with little warning. Do not attempt to drive through areas where water covers the roadway, as water depth and current strength are often deceiving and can sweep vehicles away.
