Special Weather Statement: Sudden Wind Gusts and Dust Storms Possible This Afternoon and Evening Across Torrance County

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Special Weather Statement for the Estancia Valley, Central Highlands, Sandia and Manzano Mountains, and central New Mexico, warning of unpredictable wind hazards this afternoon and evening (Monday, June 8, 2026).

Mid-level moisture is increasing in the atmosphere, leading to the development of showers and thunderstorms across portions of western and central New Mexico this afternoon into the evening. However, the very dry air beneath the cloud bases will cause most rainfall to evaporate before reaching the ground — a phenomenon known as virga. This evaporating rain is prone to producing very abrupt and erratic wind gusts with little warning.

Expected Impacts:

Wind gusts will approach speeds of 50 to 60 mph in some areas with little warning. Unlike typical wind events where sustained strong winds are forecast, the gusts associated with virga are sudden and unpredictable, occurring beneath or near shower and storm activity as it develops. Residents of Mountainair, Estancia, and Torrance County should remain alert throughout the afternoon and evening.

Blowing dust will reduce visibility dramatically. Dust storms associated with virga-induced wind gusts can drop visibility to near zero in affected areas. Drivers, especially those on the open stretches of highway across the Estancia Valley, should be prepared to pull over immediately if visibility drops suddenly.

Preparation:

Residents should monitor the sky throughout the afternoon and evening and be prepared for sudden wind gusts. Secure any loose outdoor items that may not be anchored, and remain alert while driving. If you encounter a dust storm or sudden wind gust while driving, pull off the road to a safe location and wait for visibility to improve.
