Flood Advisory for Northwestern Torrance County Through 7:45 PM; Heavy Rain Continues From Thunderstorms
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flood Advisory for northwestern Torrance County and Bernalillo County, in effect until 7:45 p.m. MDT this evening (Monday, August 31, 2026).
At 4:51 p.m. MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain from thunderstorms across the area. Between 0.75 and 1.75 inches of rain have already fallen, with additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch expected over the remainder of the advisory period. This continued rainfall will result in minor flooding of arroyos and small streams.
Expected Impacts:
Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas is expected. Rises in small streams and normally dry arroyos are anticipated as thunderstorms continue to produce heavy rainfall. Some low-water crossings may become impassable. The Chilili area and surrounding foothills terrain in northwestern Torrance County are most likely to experience flooding impacts, particularly in areas with steep slopes and poor drainage.
Precautionary Actions:
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. In hilly or mountainous terrain, there are numerous low-water crossings that are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route and allow extra time for travel until this advisory expires.
Residents should avoid parking vehicles in arroyos or washes and remain alert to changing water conditions as rainfall continues through the evening.
