Fire Weather Watch Issued for Torrance County; Critical Conditions Expected Wednesday
MOUNTAINAIR, N.M. — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Torrance County and the surrounding Central Highlands, warning of critical fire conditions beginning Wednesday morning.
The watch, which includes Mountainair and the Estancia Valley, is in effect from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM MDT on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. According to forecasters, the region will experience a combination of strong winds and dangerously low humidity, creating an environment where any fire that starts could spread rapidly and become difficult to control.
Southwest to west winds are expected to reach sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph. While the strongest gusts of up to 50 mph are forecast for northern New Mexico, the Sandia and Manzano Mountains and the Central Highlands remain under significant threat due to plummeting humidity levels, which are expected to drop as low as 6% to 13%.
Meteorologists noted that while Energy Release Components — a measure of how hot a fire will burn — remain near normal for this time of year, the recent drying of fine fuels like grasses and brush may support rapid fire growth. Local officials and the National Weather Service strongly recommend that residents avoid outdoor burning and exercise extreme caution with any equipment that could produce sparks.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared as conditions intensify through Wednesday afternoon.
