Fire Truck Rolls Over Near Mountainair

MOUNTAINAIR, NM — A Torrance County Fire and Rescue engine rolled over in unincorporated Torrance County on Monday, August 31, 2026, according to personnel on scene.

The rollover occurred at roughly 12:00 PM MDT on County Road B050 near its intersection with County Road B051, roughly two miles northwest of Mountainair. Three personnel were aboard the engine at the time. The vehicle appears to have caught soft soil on the shoulder before flipping into a drainage ditch, though the Dispatch has not yet independently confirmed this account.

The driver was able to crawl from the vehicle according to eyewitnesses and evacuated to Albuquerque for treatment. The current condition of the driver and the other two personnel involved has not yet been released.

Personnel confirmed or witnessed on the scene included Torrance County Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Smith, Deputy Chief Darryl Fixler, Deputy Chief Hanna Sanchez, and a lieutenant with the last name Sanchez, distinct from Deputy Chief Sanchez. Additional personnel on scene were unconfirmed. Personnel from Mountainair Fire and the US Forest Service were also present.

The Mountainair Dispatch has reached out to Chief Smith for additional details on the injured personnel and will update this story as more information becomes available, including the cause of the incident that prompted the initial response.
