Strong Outflow Boundary Tracking Into West Central Torrance County; Gusty Winds and Blowing Dust Expected

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Special Weather Statement for a strong outflow boundary affecting west central Torrance County and neighboring areas, in effect until 5:30 p.m. MDT this afternoon (Wednesday, August 26, 2026).

At 4:43 p.m. MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong outflow boundary extending from 7 miles northwest of Los Lunas to over Lemitar, moving east at 30 mph. An outflow boundary is the leading edge of cold air flowing out from thunderstorms and can produce significant wind gusts even without heavy rain.

Expected Hazards:

Wind gusts up to 50 mph could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Blowing dust associated with strong thunderstorm winds can reduce visibility below one quarter mile at times. This sudden dust can create hazardous driving conditions, particularly along Highway 60 between Mile Markers 138 and 194 and Interstate 25 between Mile Markers 148 and 209, which cross western Torrance County.

Drivers in west central Torrance County should be prepared for sudden wind gusts and dust storms as the outflow boundary moves through. Reduce speed and pull off the roadway to a safe location if visibility drops suddenly. High-profile vehicles such as RVs and semitrailers should exercise extra caution, as gusty winds can make vehicle control difficult.
