Details: Joan Bybee, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Linguistics from the University of New Mexico, will demonstrate how the family relations of a language are determined and show how this information helps us understand the relative timing of migrations. This method helps us understand how long the different Native American groups associated with Puebloan culture have been in the Southwest. Linguistic evidence can complement archaeological evidence to determine the movements of people in prehistory. It also reveals features of prehistoric culture.
