Strong Thunderstorm Tracking Into Western Torrance County; Gusty Winds and Hail Expected Through 6 PM

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Special Weather Statement for a strong thunderstorm affecting west central Torrance County, in effect until 6 p.m. MDT this evening (Wednesday, June 18, 2026).

At 5:23 p.m. MDT, Doppler radar was tracking the strong thunderstorm 6 miles west of Tajique, moving southwest at 10 mph. The storm is capable of producing gusty winds and hail, with impacts expected across the western reaches of Torrance County and the Manzano Mountains area.

Expected Hazards:

Wind gusts up to 50 mph could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Nickel-size hail is possible, with minor damage to vehicles, property, and outdoor objects expected.

Locations directly impacted include Manzano, Tajique, Punta de Agua, and Torreon. Residents in these mountainous areas should remain alert as the storm moves through.

Flash Flood Risk:

Heavy rains from severe thunderstorms can produce sudden and dangerous flows in arroyos, ditches, and over low water crossings. Residents and travelers in the Manzano Mountains and foothills should be aware that small streams and arroyos can swell rapidly with little warning. Do not attempt to drive through areas where water covers the roadway, as water depth and current strength are often deceiving and can sweep vehicles away.
