Strong Thunderstorm Impacts Northwestern Torrance County
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque issued a Special Weather Statement on Sunday, July 6, warning of a strong thunderstorm impacting northwestern Torrance County, including areas near Edgewood and Chilili, until 2:45 p.m. MDT.
As of 2:08 p.m., Doppler radar tracked the storm approximately 6 miles southeast of Sedillo, or 12 miles west of Moriarty, moving south at 5 mph. The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 mph and nickel-sized hail.
Expected Impacts:
- Gusty winds may cause minor damage to outdoor structures, knock down small tree limbs, and blow around unsecured items.
- Small hail may temporarily create slick and hazardous road conditions, especially along Interstate 40 near mile markers 187 to 188.
Communities potentially affected include Edgewood, Escabosa, Chilili, Miera, and Ponderosa Pines. Although this storm has not yet prompted a severe thunderstorm warning, officials caution that it may intensify.
