Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Torrance County and Northeast New Mexico Until 10 PM
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Torrance County and a broad region of northeast and east central New Mexico, in effect until 10 p.m. MDT this evening (Wednesday, June 24, 2026).
This watch covers 11 counties across three regions of New Mexico and includes communities throughout Torrance County, including Mountainair, Estancia, Moriarty, McIntosh, and Clines Corners. The watch indicates that atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, though storms are not yet confirmed or imminent in all areas.
What a Severe Thunderstorm Watch Means:
A watch does not mean severe weather is certain, but rather that conditions exist for severe thunderstorms to develop. Residents should remain alert and monitor weather conditions closely throughout the afternoon and evening. Severe thunderstorms have the potential to produce large hail, damaging winds of 58 mph or greater, and heavy rainfall. Some storms may also produce tornadoes.
Preparation:
Residents of Torrance County should:
- Monitor local weather through local news, the National Weather Service, or weather apps throughout the watch period
- Have a plan for where to shelter if warnings are issued (a basement or interior room away from windows)
- Secure loose outdoor items that could be blown around by damaging winds
- Avoid outdoor activities late this afternoon and this evening
- Keep emergency supplies on hand, including flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio or smartphone with alerts enabled
