The Mountainair Dispatch is aware that Central New Mexico Electric Cooperative (CNMEC) is planning a power outage in the vicinity of Corona, New Mexico, on Friday, January 23, from approximately 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This planned outage is scheduled during a period when severe winter weather is expected, including snow and hazardous travel conditions.

I have contacted CNMEC to request comment and clarification regarding the timing of this outage in relation to the anticipated weather, whether it has taken any steps to protect at-risk residents, whether it has identified any at-risk residents, and whether it has planned to set up a warming station in the area. As of publication, no response has been received. This post will be updated if and when CNMEC provides additional information.

Residents in the affected area should be aware of the current National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning, which can be viewed at this link: https://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=NMZ222&warncounty=NMC057&firewxzone=NMZ124&local_place1=3 Miles ESE Moriarty NM&product1=Winter+Storm+Watch&lat=34.9782&lon=-106

If you are in or near the Corona or Duran area and expect to be impacted by this outage, you may want to plan accordingly, especially if you rely on electricity for heating, medical devices, or communications.

The Dispatch will continue to follow up and share updates as they become available.
