High Wind Watch Issued for Torrance County and Eastern New Mexico from Saturday Night Through Sunday
This weather alert covers high winds related to the fire weather in the previous weather alert, but focuses on those winds rather than the fire risk.
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a High Wind Watch for Torrance County, the Estancia Valley, the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, and eastern New Mexico, in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday afternoon (March 15–16, 2026).
Forecasters expect west to northwest winds of 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph across the region. As a backdoor cold front moves across eastern New Mexico, winds will shift to become northerly, intensifying the wind event. These are damaging wind speeds capable of significant impacts across Torrance County and surrounding areas.
Expected Impacts:
Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible, particularly across areas with older infrastructure or exposed power lines. Residents should prepare for the possibility of extended outages and should ensure backup power sources, flashlights, and batteries are on hand.
Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as RVs, semitrailers, and livestock trailers. Drivers in the Estancia Valley and along exposed routes across Torrance County are urged to exercise extreme caution, as sudden gusts may make vehicle control challenging. Localized areas of blowing dust may reduce visibility, further complicating driving conditions.
Preparation:
Residents of Mountainair, Estancia, Moriarty, and surrounding communities should secure outdoor items before Saturday evening, including trash cans, patio furniture, tarps, and loose debris. Check trees and branches for dead limbs that may fall during the high winds. Ensure that livestock have adequate shelter and that any outdoor equipment is properly secured.
