Flash Flood Warning Issued for Northwestern Torrance County

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northwestern Torrance County, including Edgewood, Chilili, McIntosh, and surrounding areas, effective until 9:15 p.m. MDT on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

At 6:21 p.m., Doppler radar indicated intense thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall across the East Mountains, including communities such as Tijeras, Cedar Crest, and Chilili. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have already fallen, with an additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches possible. Flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the affected areas.

Impacted Areas:

  • Edgewood
  • Escabosa
  • Sedillo
  • Cedar Grove
  • Tijeras
  • McIntosh
  • Miera
  • Sandia Park

Travel Alert:

  • Interstate 40 between mile markers 173 and 193 may be impacted by hazardous flooding conditions and reduced visibility.

Hazards and Safety:

Flash flooding can result in rapid rises of small creeks, arroyos, and low-lying roadways, particularly those with poor drainage. Motorists should never attempt to drive through flooded roads—as the National Weather Service cautions: Turn around, don’t drown.

If you are in a flood-prone area, especially along arroyos or near underpasses, take immediate precautions to move to higher ground and avoid travel until the warning expires or is lifted. Flash flooding is a serious and life-threatening hazard, especially in areas of steep terrain and limited drainage.

Stay up to date with emergency alerts and weather advisories by checking the Albuquerque office of the National Weather Service and signing up for notifications through the Torrance County Department of Emergency Management’s Code Red system.
