Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Mountainair and Southwestern Torrance County
The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southwestern Torrance County, including the town of Mountainair, in effect until 3:30 p.m. MDT on Monday, June 9, 2025. Similarly, Torrance County Emergency Management has issued a Code Red alert for the same region.
As of 2:58 p.m., radar indicated a severe thunderstorm located approximately 6 miles south of Mountainair, moving east at 5 mph. The storm is producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters (1 inch in diameter).
Expected Impacts:
- Hail may cause damage to vehicles and property.
- Strong wind gusts could damage roofs, siding, and trees.
- Highway 60 between mile markers 203 and 208 is expected to be impacted.
- Accumulated hail on roads may cause very slick and hazardous driving conditions.
Residents of Mountainair are urged to seek shelter indoors immediately, preferably in a well-built structure away from windows. Drivers should exercise extreme caution or avoid travel altogether until the storm has passed.
The storm poses a significant risk of localized damage due to strong wind and hail, and further thunderstorm development is possible as conditions remain unstable across central New Mexico.
