Flood Watch, Severe Thunderstorm Warning, and Severe Weather Warning Issued for Torrance County

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flood Watch and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Torrance County, including Mountainair, as a round of potentially dangerous weather impacts the region.

Flood Watch Details

A Flood Watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through late Tuesday night for much of central and northern New Mexico, including the Estancia Valley and Mountainair. The watch warns of the possibility of flash flooding due to excessive rainfall, particularly as numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and evening. Rainfall rates may reach one to two inches per hour, leading to rapid runoff, rises in creeks and streams, and possible flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Residents should remain alert for Flash Flood Warnings and be prepared to take immediate action if flooding occurs. Areas recently affected by wildfires or with dry, hardened soil—such as the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon burn scar—are especially vulnerable to flash flooding.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning and Severe Weather Warning

As of 3:20 p.m. MDT on Monday, June 23, a severe thunderstorm was detected near Vaughn, moving north at 30 mph. The storm is producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail, and is expected to impact southeastern Torrance County, including the communities of Encino and Duran.

This warning is in effect until 3:45 p.m. MDT and includes Highway 60 between mile markers 254 and 267. The storm may cause hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Residents are urged to seek shelter in a sturdy building away from windows, and avoid travel if possible while the storm is active. Be especially cautious of hail accumulation on roads, which can lead to slick and hazardous driving conditions.

Preparedness and Updates

Flooding and severe weather can develop quickly. Residents are advised to monitor the latest forecasts and have a plan in place to respond to flash floods or damaging storms.
